What are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a natural part of aging. When the clear lens within the eye becomes clouded over time this is a cataract. The clouding of the lens usually happens very slowly and may be difficult to notice at first. Colors may not be as vivid. Glare may be noticed when driving at night or in bright sunlight. Small print becomes more difficult to read and even television can be difficult to see.
When should I have them removed?
When a cataract becomes visually significant and interferes with your daily routine or lifestyle it is time to talk to your doctor about its removal. The level of visual impairment necessary for cataract removal can vary from patient to patient. Some patients may not be bothered by a dense cataract while others find it difficult to function even with a small cataract. When deciding to have cataract surgery, there are more options than ever before that can get you out of your glasses completely in some cases. Read more about our Premium IOL's.
Meet Your Cataract Surgeon before your operation.
Before you decide to have your cataracts removed you need to meet with your surgeon and discuss the risk, options and complications of cataract surgery. You need to fully understand the procedure and its risks before you enter a surgery center. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in
the United States. Make sure you understand the procedure and that the surgeon has gone over a consent form with you and answered all your questions. Marge, our surgical coordinator, can answer any questions you have and can be reached at 717-524-1411.
