Cornea Care in Hanover, PA

The cornea is the clear front window of the eye. Because it is packed with nerve endings, even a small scratch can feel enormous — and because it is the eye’s strongest lens, small changes in its shape change how you see.

Corneal problems come in two broad kinds, and the answers in this section cover both. The first kind is sudden and uncomfortable: abrasions, foreign-body sensation, keratitis, and recurrent corneal erosion. These usually heal well, but the eye that hurts, waters, and cannot tolerate light deserves an examination rather than guesswork — some corneal infections can threaten vision if treatment is delayed.

The second kind develops slowly. Keratoconus gradually steepens and thins the cornea, often starting in the teens and twenties; corneal cross-linking exists to stiffen the cornea and slow that progression, which is why catching it early matters. Fuchs’ dystrophy affects the inner pump cells of the cornea over decades, and surgical options are chosen based on how the whole cornea — not a single measurement — is functioning. Growths like pterygium and pinguecula are common in people who spend years outdoors and are usually managed conservatively.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer for a cornea problem: the plan depends on your whole eye, your prescription, and how the cornea is actually behaving on examination and imaging. These answers explain what each condition means, what to avoid, and when to be seen at our Hanover office — serving York, Gettysburg, Adams County, and northern Maryland.
