Dr. Carl J. May Jr. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and the founder of The May Eye Care Center & Associates in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Over a surgical career spanning more than three decades — all of it in Hanover — Dr. May has performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries and thousands of LASIK and glaucoma procedures, making him one of South-Central Pennsylvania’s most experienced eye surgeons.

Three decades of surgical excellence in Hanover

Dr. May has cared for the eyes of South-Central Pennsylvania since 1994, when he joined South Penn Eye Care Surgeons in Hanover after completing his ophthalmology residency. In April 2001, he founded The May Eye Care Center & Associates, building it into one of the region’s most trusted destinations for laser cataract surgery, LASIK, and medical eye care. Since 2013, he has also served as Medical Director of Cherry Tree Surgical.

Patients travel to Dr. May from across Hanover, York, Gettysburg, New Oxford, Littlestown, and Spring Grove, as well as Hampstead, Westminster, and the rest of Carroll County, Maryland — drawn by a surgeon who pairs big-city surgical technology with hometown continuity of care. The physician who evaluates you is the surgeon who operates and the doctor who follows your recovery.

Dr. May specializes in refractive laser-assisted cataract surgery (ReLACS) with premium lens implant options, wavefront-guided custom LASIK and Advanced Surface Treatment (PRK) on the VISX Star S4, refractive lens exchange, and the full spectrum of glaucoma care — from SLT laser to minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS).

He wrote the book on LASIK — literally

Dr. May was performing laser vision correction in Hanover during LASIK’s earliest years, and he authored LASIK Vision Correction (Doctor to Patient Series, MedWorld Publishing, 2000), a patient education book that walks readers through the procedure in plain language — the same doctor-to-patient clarity he brings to every consultation.

His clinical research has appeared in peer-reviewed publications, including an 11-year study of canalicular lacerations in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and a 2010 glaucoma medication adherence study conducted at The May Eye Care Center and published by Dove Medical Press. He has presented at the Wills Eye Hospital Annual Conference and delivered grand rounds on topics ranging from ophthalmic manifestations of systemic disease to retinopathy of prematurity.
