Can Macular Degeneration Be Treated?

Macular degeneration affects the macula, the central part of the retina that provides sharp reading, driving, and face-recognition vision. Peripheral vision is usually spared, but central vision can become blurred, distorted, or missing.

Wavy lines, central blur, trouble reading, dark central spots, and reduced detail vision can be mild or serious depending on timing, severity, one-eye versus both-eyes involvement, and whether vision is changing. Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, usually develops over years. Dry AMD is more common and involves aging changes and deposits under the retina called drusen. Do not take AREDS2 vitamins without knowing your AMD stage. Do not ignore distortion in one eye. Do not assume stronger reading glasses will fix macular disease.
