What is the best way to clean my glasses?

Medically reviewed by Carl J. May Jr., MD · American Board of OphthalmologyReviewed July 9, 2026
Direct answer

Rinse the lenses under lukewarm water first to wash away dust that would otherwise scratch, add a small drop of dish soap, rub gently with clean fingertips, rinse again, and dry with a clean microfiber cloth. Avoid paper towels, shirttails, hot water, and household glass cleaners — ammonia strips lens coatings. Clean the frame and nose pads while you’re at it. Done daily, this keeps coatings intact and vision crisp; scratches and permanently hazy coatings are a reason to see your optician, not scrub harder.

Question 1: True or False - using your breath to fog up your glasses is a great way to clean your lenses The answer? False! Although it is convenient, you should never use water or saliva to clean your glasses because it is unhygienic and most importantly, it just doesn’t do a good job! Instead, create a lather over the lenses using a bit of unscented dish soap. Avoid soaps with moisturizer as this can leave a film. Rinse with water to remove the suds. Question 2: What should you use to wipe your glasses? Paper towels Facial tissues Your shirt None of the above The answer is D, none of the above!
